Ham Agro-Processing Industries is spearheading the establishment of Integrated Agro-Processing Industrial Parks (IAIPs) at ten strategically significant crop and livestock production zones across Uganda. This ambitious initiative aligns with Uganda’s agro-ecological zones and leverages the country’s natural resource endowments and competitive comparative advantages in agriculture.
Agro-Ecological Zones in Uganda
Uganda features ten distinct agro-ecological zones that form the foundation for the IAIP project:
- North-eastern Dry Lands
- North-eastern Savannah Grasslands
- North-western Savannah Grasslands
- Parra Savannahs
- Kyoga Plains
- Lake Victoria Crescent
- Western Savannah Grasslands
- Pastoral Rangelands
- South-western Farmlands
- Highland Ranges
Each zone is selected based on its unique crop and livestock production capacity, ensuring a tailored approach to agro-processing development.
Integrated Agro-Processing Industrial Parks (IAIPs)
An Integrated Agro-Processing Industrial Park (IAIP) is a specialized hub featuring large, medium, and small-scale food processing units. These parks are equipped with both basic and advanced infrastructure to support agro-processing industries effectively. The IAIPs aim to enhance agricultural value addition, facilitate export promotion, and create economic opportunities across Uganda.
Infrastructure and Facilities
The IAIPs include:
- Core Infrastructure: Internal roads, warehouses, cold storage units, effluent treatment plants, and food laboratories.
- Utilities: Reliable water and electricity supply, sewage systems, and waste dumping sites.
- Transport and Logistics: Paved roads, container parks, parking areas, and vehicle assistance centers.
- Support Services: Offices for banking, customs, postal services, and currency exchange.
- Security: Comprehensive human and electronic surveillance systems.
- Recreational Amenities: Cafeterias and recreational zones.
- Specialized Units: Veterinary services, laboratories for quality control, and marketing and export offices.
Ancillary Units
To complement the food processing units, the parks will house:
- Packaging and printing units.
- Transportation and forwarding agencies.
- Other service-oriented agencies supporting logistical needs.
Key Focus Areas
The IAIPs prioritize:
- Value Addition: High-value processing of fresh fruits, vegetables, and other food products.
- Export Promotion: Targeting markets in the East African Community (EAC), Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the European Union (EU), and the Gulf States.
- Sustainability: Leveraging modern infrastructure and resource-efficient practices.
