You might be wondering where you can find these settings in the Google Chrome menu if you’ve never changed them before.
Adjusting your language settings is an easy way of customizing Google Chrome. Here is what you need to know about changing your language settings and preferences.
Google Chrome is a convenient web browser because it automatically offers to translate most foreign language websites into English, both on the desktop and your phone.
You can turn this feature on or off, though it’s on by default.
Here’s how to translate whole webpages in Google Chrome, both on your desktop and in the mobile app for iPhone and Android. change your language in Google Chrome
On Computer Translate webpages in Chrome
When you come across a page written in a language you don’t understand, you can use Chrome to translate the page.
- On your computer, open Chrome.
- Go to a webpage written in another language.
- At the top, click Translate.
- Chrome will translate the webpage this one time.
Not working? Try refreshing the webpage. If it’s still not working, right-click anywhere on the page. Then, click Translate to [Language].
Change your default translation settings
By default, Chrome offers to translate pages written in a language you don’t understand.
Request translation or turn translation off
You can control whether Chrome will offer to translate webpages.
- On your computer, open Chrome.
- At the top right, click More
Settings.
- At the bottom, click Advanced.
- Under “Languages,” click Language.
- Check or uncheck “Offer to translate pages that aren’t in a language you read.”
Turn translation on or off for a specific language
You can control whether Chrome will offer to translate webpages in a specific language.
- On your computer, open Chrome.
- At the top right, click More

- At the bottom, click Advanced.
- Under “Languages,” click Language.
- Next to the language you’d like to use, click More
.
- If the language isn’t listed, add it by clicking Add languages.
- Turn Offer to translate pages in this language on or off.
Change the language of your Chrome browser (Windows & Chromebook only)
You can set Chrome to show all settings and menus in the language you want. This option is only available on Windows and Chromebook computers.
On Mac or Linux? Chrome will automatically display in the default system language for your computer.
- On your computer, open Chrome.
- At the top right, click More

- At the bottom, click Advanced.
- Under “Languages,” click Language.
- Next to the language you’d like to use, click More
.
- If the language isn’t listed, add it by clicking Add languages.
- Click Display Google Chrome in this language or Display Chrome OS in this language.
- This option is only available on Windows and Chromebook computers.
- Restart Chrome to apply the changes.
Write in an unsupported language
If you need to write using a language that your computer doesn’t support, use the Google Input Tools Chrome extension.
If you’re using Windows, you might need to configure your Windows language settings to add East Asian languages or other languages that use complex scripts.

Not working? Try refreshing the webpage. If you still can’t tap Translate, the language might not be available for translation.

Undo “always translate” for a language
If you choose to always translate or never translate a language, you can undo your translation preferences.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chrome app

- Go to a webpage written in that language. The page will start translating automatically.
- Tap More
and uncheck Always translate this language.
On iPhone & iPad – change your language in Google Chrome
