List of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in Kenya

In Kenya, Independent Power Producers (IPPs) own and operate power stations that sell electricity in bulk to Kenya Power, helping meet the country’s growing power needs. Currently, Kenya has six licensed IPPs.

    • Capacity: 74 MW (Thermal Power)
    • Description: Operates Tsavo Thermal Power Station, providing essential electricity supply in Mombasa.
  2. Iberafrica Power Ltd
    • Established: 1997
    • Location: Industrial Area, Nairobi
    • Capacity: 108.5 MW (split between two plants)
    • Description: Operates two plants with outputs of 56 MW and 52.5 MW, respectively, supplying energy to Nairobi.
  3. Thika Power Ltd
    • Parent Company: Matelec Group of Companies
    • Location: Thika
    • Capacity: 87 MW
    • Description: Began operations in 2014, providing significant power supply from its Thika-based plant.
  4. Rabai Power Limited
    • Location: Rabai, Kilifi County
    • Capacity: 90 MW
    • Established: 2010
    • Description: Operates a high-capacity plant to support electricity needs in the coastal region.
  5. Gulf Power
    • Location: Athi River
    • Capacity: 80.3 MW
    • Established: 2014
    • Description: Provides substantial power from its Athi River plant, contributing to the country’s industrial power needs.
  6. Triumph Power
    • Location: Athi River
    • Capacity: 83 MW
    • Established: 2015
    • Description: Operates a thermal power plant, supplying energy to nearby areas and industries.
