The Orkoiik were a revered group of spiritual leaders among the Nandi, a subtribe of the Kalenjin community in Kenya. Their origins trace back to the Uasin Gishu Maasai, specifically the Segelai clan, whose influence shaped the religious and cultural landscape of the Nandi people.
Origins of the Orkoiik
Maasai Roots
Koitaleel Araap Samoei, a legendary Orkoiyot, along with his brothers Kipchomber and Kibuuigut, were descendants of the Uasin Gishu Maasai. Their father, Kimyoleei Simboleei Araap Turukat, hailed from the prestigious Turukat lineage, itself rooted in the Uasin Gishu Maasai’s Segelai clan. This lineage introduced the first Nandi Orkoiik, who rose to prominence during the Nandi-Maasai conflicts of the 1700s.
Assimilation into the Nandi
Following the defeat of the Uasin Gishu Maasai by the Nandi in the 1700s, members of the Segelai clan, including Kapuso, sought refuge among the Nandi. They were assimilated into the Talai clan, a widespread Kalenjin clan aligned with the Lion Totem. Kapuso’s descendants, including the Oloibonik (Maasai seers), became the Nandi Orkoiik, bringing with them a wealth of spiritual and military expertise.
Role of the Orkoiik
The Orkoiik held significant influence in quasi-religious matters among the Nandi. While they were not political leaders, their spiritual guidance and military strategies profoundly impacted the Nandi’s societal organization. Inspired by the power of the Maasai Oloibonik during the Nandi-Maasai wars, the Nandi embraced the Orkoiik, whose contributions helped strengthen their military discipline and belief systems.
The Turukat Dynasty
The Founding
The Turukat dynasty of Orkoiik was established through Moki chebo Cheplabot, a Maasai Laibon’s wife who fled to the Mogobich Valley during a conflict with the Nandi. Pregnant and hiding in caves near Keben, she bore two sons, Kopokoii and Barsapotwa, who were later adopted into the Talai clan. Kopokoii would become the first Orkoiyot of the dynasty.
Key Figures
- Kopokoii: The patriarch of the Turukat dynasty, who solidified the Orkoiik’s status within the Talai clan.
- Kimyoleei Simboleei Araap Turukat: A legendary Orkoiyot, father to five influential sons, including:

- Koitaleel Araap Samoei, the most renowned Orkoiyot.
The Orkoiik’s Influence on Nandi Warfare
The spiritual and military discipline brought by the Orkoiik contributed significantly to the Nandi’s success in driving the Maasai out of the North Rift region. The Orkoiik’s guidance bolstered the Nandi’s war formations, making them a formidable force in the region.
Legacy of the Orkoiik
The Orkoiik were pivotal in shaping the socio-political and spiritual framework of the Nandi. The Turukat lineage, rooted in both Maasai and Nandi traditions, symbolizes a unique fusion of cultures that left an indelible mark on the history of the Kalenjin and Kenya as a whole. Today, the legacy of the Orkoiik endures through oral traditions and historical accounts, honoring their role as spiritual leaders and defenders of the Nandi people.
